Hyperbaric chamber

Hyperbaric chamber

In our Centre we have a modern, single-person hyperbaric chamber enabling the use of pressure up to 3.2 ATA.

Hyperbaric therapy is a non-invasive method of treating diseases and ailments consisting in breathing 100% oxygen administered under increased pressure. The therapy takes place in a special place – a hyperbaric chamber. Staying in the hyperbaric chamber effectively saturates tissues with oxygen. Oxygen penetrates red blood cells, its concentration also increases in plasma, lymphatic system and cerebrospinal fluid.
Due to the increased pressure, oxygen reaches places where it has no chance to get to on a daily basis. The therapy stimulates dormant cells and restores their proper functioning. It improves tissue regeneration and accelerates wound healing. Moreover, it slows down the aging process, reduces inflammation and effectively treats bacterial infections, fibromyalgia or borreliosis. The treatment is painless – it consists in inhaling therapeutic oxygen in a specially constructed hyperbaric chamber under the supervision of qualified personnel.

How HBOT affects our body:

  • provides increased oxygen to diseased and hypoxic tissues and organs
  • improves blood circulation
  • supports the body in the fight against infections
  • bactericidal and bacteriostatic
  • slows down the aging process
  • reduces tissue swelling and fluid loss
  • reduces the volume of gas bubbles
  • accelerates the elimination of carbon monoxide
  • improves sexual performance and helps maintain it
  • improves ability to remember and concentrate
  • accelerates metabolic changes
  • speeds up the treatment of difficult to heal wounds

Hyperbaric chamber treatments

In order for the treatments in the hyperbaric chamber to bring the expected results, they must be performed systematically. The height of the applied air or oxygen pressure, the time of therapy and the number of treatments are adjusted individually. The standard procedure lasts from 45 to 90 minutes, it takes place once a day – the total number of treatments for individual patients is from 10 to 60 and depends on the diagnosed disease. The hyperbaric chamber allows to achieve a pressure above 1.5 ATA, thanks to which the therapy brings measurable effects.

Throughout the entire procedure, a paramedic is in the room, who maintains constant visual and audible contact with the patient, operates the control panel located outside the chamber and supervises the correct course of the procedure. The paramedic communicates with the patient via an intercom. The transparency of the housing reduces the feeling of isolation and increases the safety of the person in the chamber. During the procedure, the patient can listen to his favourite music, watch TV or selected films.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also used in sport.

It is used by both professional athletes as well as those who practice less competitive sports. Treatments in the hyperbaric chamber guarantee quicker regeneration after a hard, exercise training, reduce the oxygen deficit and allow for faster recovery after a possible injury. Due to the therapy, the amount of ATP (so-called muscle fuel) molecules increases and the effect of muscle acidification disappears. In addition, metabolism improves and the level of dehydration decreases.

„Exposure to hyperbaric oxygen mobilizes stem cells for repair. Being in a hyperbaric chamber stimulates the bone marrow to produce stem cells. Due to hyperbaric therapy, their number increases up to eight times. By breathing pure oxygen, the patient provides 15 times more oxygen to the body than by breathing normally.”

The patient who wants to make an appointment for treatment in the hyperbaric chamber should do so beforehand:

  • Chest x-ray with description (applies to patients with lung, cardiovascular, systemic, cancer diseases, retinal detachment, extreme age above 75).
  • Resting ECG with description – can be done in Krajmeda – cost 35 zł.
  • Tympanometry (checking the functioning of ears) – can be done in Krajmeda – cost 35 PLN
  • Qualification for the hyperbaric chamber – 180 PLN

Contraindications:

  • Absolute: untreated pneumothorax, use of certain drugs,,
  • Relative: upper respiratory tract infection, febrile states, pregnancy, epilepsy, bronchial asthma, emphysema, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), heart failure, past sinus, ear and chest surgery, optic nerve inflammation, disseminated disease, cancer, claustrophobia

Preparation:

  • You should be without make-up
  • Do not use lotions and creams
  • Do not use hairspray or hair gel
  • Do not use ointments, creams for wounds, burns
  • Come with a clean, changed wound dressing (no change of dressing is necessary during the procedure)
  • Do not use perfume
  • Remove lenses from eyes and dentures
  • Remove the nitroglycerin, hormonal, analgesic, nicotine, hormonal and pain relieving patches.
  • If you’re diabetic, you must have a meal an hour before entering the chamber
  • Refrain from smoking 2 hours before the session
  • Refrain from alcohol during the entire HBOT therapy cycle
  • Take the medications previously used as recommended

Immediately before the treatment:

  • Change into cotton clothes
  • Take off all the jewellery
  • Take off your shoes
  • Use the toilet
  • Drink a small amount of water

No one is allowed in the chamber:

  • lighters
  • matchsticks
  • cell phones
  • batteries
  • thermometers
  • synthetic clothes and materials (bedding, blankets, sheets, pillows, mattresses)
  • electrical equipment (radios, mp3 players)
  • combustible materials
  • fresh prints (newspapers etc.)
  • metal materials (including gold or silver jewellery)

Procedure

  • After entering the chamber, the pressure in the chamber is gradually increased
  • The pressure is maintained at the target value
  • Before the end of the procedure, the pressure in the chamber is gradually reduced to atmospheric pressure.
  • After the pressure equalization, you can leave the chamber

Recommendations after the procedure

  • For 20 minutes, the patient is kept under observation by the staff of Krajmed
  • You must refrain from physical exercise for 4 hours
  • We recommend that you do not spend the night after the first treatment alone
  • For 24 hours after the last surgery in the hyperbaric chamber, do not fly the plane
