Polysomnography is performed to assess how a person sleeps, and whether breathing disorders occur during sleep. The indications for performing such a test include mainly the suspicion of breathing disorders during sleep. The main symptoms include loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, and a tendency to fall asleep under different circumstances.

What does a sleep study consist of?

Such a test is also performed on insomnia patients who sleep poorly or wake up frequently during the night. It consists of a continuous recording of the sleep of the subject, which includes a record of the electrical activity of the brain, eye movement, muscle work during sleep. An important part of the study is also the recording of respiratory activity: airflow through the airways, respiratory movements of the chest and abdomen, and oxygen compactness in the blood. In addition, during such an examination, a record is made of the sounds of snoring and the positions of the body during sleep are monitored.
