What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis, as the name suggests, is an inflammation that affects the mucous membrane lining the sinuses. The cause of the onset of inflammation can be bacterial, viral and other microbial infections. Sometimes structural changes within the sinuses, including blockage of the sinus mouth, also contribute to sinus inflammation. When the sinus mouth is obstructed for some reason, a disruption of the natural cleansing process of the sinuses is created. This causes infections and eventually leads to inflammation.
What are the varieties of sinusitis?
Two forms of sinusitis can be distinguished: acute and chronic. Most often, sinusitis is preceded by a cold or allergy, accompanied by a runny nose and irritation of the mucous membrane. There is usually a feeling of pressure in the nasal area, nasal congestion or excessive secretion of mucus, the so-called “runny nose” and fever. The discomfort usually accompanies a few days, while if the symptoms continue, an infection can develop and cause acute sinusitis. When sinusitis occurs frequently or lasts for a long time (more than 3 months) then it is called chronic. Then the key role is to contact a specialist as soon as possible and treat the sinuses.

The most common treatments for sinusitis include drug therapy and conventional surgery. The primary surgical solution is sinus surgery using micro endoscopic surgery tools of the so-called second generation = cutting (cutting). They cause the least amount of tissue damage. This method is often combined with other techniques like:
- FEOZ (functional endoscopic sinus surgery)/FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery).
The main task is to eliminate lesions and widen natural outlets. During the procedure, mucosal hypertrophy, polyps and small, bony structures in functionally unfavorable anatomical variants are also removed. The goal of this method is to restore proper ventilation of the paranasal sinuses. FEOZ/ FESS is a state-of-the-art sinus treatment technique. It is carried out using precision microsurgical instruments. Patients who suffer from chronic sinusitis and conservative treatment is not successful undergo the procedure.
