Ears
Inflammation middle ear
Otitis media is more common in children than in adults. One reason is a still immature immune system (greater susceptibility to infection). Other reasons may be an overgrowth of the third tonsil, staying in rooms polluted with cigarette smoke, too little time outdoors and anatomical conditions. The Eustachian tube (the tube connecting the middle ear to the throat) is shorter and more horizontally located in children. With a runny nose, secretions can pass from the throat or nose into the ear. The obstructed outflow of secretions causes trapped microorganisms (bacteria, viruses) to multiply in the middle ear, causing inflammation. Inhalant or food allergies can also often be the cause of ear infections.
EAR OPERATIONS
Myringotomy with drainage
The purpose of the procedure is to clear the ear of fluid and provide ventilation to equalize pressure on both sides of the eardrum. In children it is carried out under anesthesia, in adults under local anesthesia. It involves making an incision in the eardrum (about 1.5 mm long) and removing fluid from the ear, followed by the insertion of a small drain (Teflon, silicone or titanium). The drain remains in the ear for 3,6,9 months, or longer depending on the type of drain-so that the ear can continue to clear and equalize pressure-and when it falls out, the incision overgrows without a trace. Usually an adenotomy is performed along with the myringotomy to unblock the ear trumpet outlets.
Improving hearing
Tympanoplasty at Krajmed CM
A general term for all hearing-improving surgeries aimed at reconstructing the sound-conducting apparatus (restoring the eardrum and continuity of the chain of ossicles).
Myringoplasty
Middle ear surgery, involving the reconstruction of the tympanic membrane made with temporal fascia, ochreous or cartilage. It constitutes a stage of tympanoplasty.
Stapedectomy / stapedotomy
Surgical procedure to remove the stirrup / part of the stirrup, usually performed in the course of otosclerosis (disease of the middle and inner ear). The stirrup is replaced with a prosthesis, which is placed in the oval window / or hole in the stirrup plate and connected to the anvil.
