
Throat and larynx
Dear patient,
Every surgical procedure (operation) may involve:
- with consequences that are the result of the disease or treatment (can occur at any stage of diagnosis and treatment)
- with complications which, although not due to an error, are undesirable events (occur with different frequency).
After the adenotomy the following consequences or complications may occur
Frequent but harmless
- Early bleeding from the nose and throat (on day 1) requiring the insertion of a nasal or nasopharyngeal tamponade (posterior tamponade) or a second operation (readenotomy)
- Late bleeding (mainly until day 7)
- Inexpensive nose due to tissue swelling (temporarily)
- Emphysema in the neck and face
- Trumpet shaft injury
- Inflammation of the middle ear
- Voting colour change, usually of a temporary nature
- A re-growth of the tonsil may appear
- Rare, much more serious
- Prevertebral fascia injury with neck stiffness and spinal irritation
- Food leakage, especially nasal fluids
- Open drawing
- Nasal obstruction due to adhesions in the nasopharynx
The following consequences or complications may occur after the removal of the palatal tonsils
Frequent but harmless
- Uvula swelling, sore throat, sore ears
- Bleeding from the throat – early ( in 1 day)
- Late bleeding (on subsequent days, mainly up to 7 days)
- Emphysema in the neck
- Changing the tone of voice, adapting
- Magnification and pain in the neck lymph nodes in the first days after surgery
- Distant consequences such as dryness in the throat, burning, more frequent appearance of hoarseness
Rare, much more serious
- severe bleeding requiring sewing up tonsil niches and putting the patient to sleep and tamponing the lower throat,
sore throat
After UPPP treatment, the following consequences or complications may occur
Frequent but harmless
- Swelling, sore throat, sore ears
- Bleeding from the throat – early (in 1 day)
- Late bleeding (on subsequent days, mainly up to 7 days)
- Emphysema in the neck
- Changing the tone of voice, adapting
- Magnification and pain in the neck lymph nodes in the first days after surgery
- Taste and sensation abnormalities in the throat
- Swallowing disorder lasting 2 to 3 weeks
- Distant consequences such as dryness in the throat, burning, more frequent appearance of hoarseness
Rare but much more serious
- severe bleeding requiring sewing up tonsil niches or putting the patient to sleep and tampering with the lower throat
