Hematology is an interdisciplinary science. It is a field of clinical medicine dealing with composition, function, properties and diseases of the blood and hematopoietic system. Hematology is mainly based on laboratory blood tests. The basic test is blood morphology (it is recommended to perform such a test at least once a year). Blood is liquid tissue, which has a very important function in our body. If it is healthy, organs are well nourished and our body’s defence system works effectively.
A haematologist is engaged in consultations on blood diseases such as thrombocytopenia, anaemia, haemorrhagic flaws, venous thromboembolism. Often, in addition to laboratory tests, a haematologist can order a lymphatic system or bone marrow biopsy. Current diagnostic methods allow early detection of blood and lymphatic system abnormalities, which significantly improves the possibilities of effective treatment.
